Borrowing Privileges:

Books are checked out to California State University, Stanislaus faculty for the semester; periodicals are checked out for 14 days.  Exceptions to these circulation periods include:

  • Items on Reserve
  • Reference materials
  • 14-day books
  • "Library use only" and "1-week only" periodicals
  • Recalled material
  • CDs (overnight loan)
  • Videos (1 week loan)

Course Reserves:

The Library maintains a "reserve" collection behind the Circulation counter, primarily to make a small number of high-demand, course-related publications available to large numbers of students through short-term loans.  Materials which instructors can place on reserve include normally circulating publications from the CSUS University Library, and materials from the instructor's personal collection,  including copies made in accordance with copyright law.  The Library is not able to place on reserve publications borrowed from other libraries.  In addition, special restrictions apply to videos.  To insure the availability of reserve materials during the first week of classes, the Circulation Department requests that materials be brought to the Library at least one week prior to the beginning of the term.   After the first two weeks of the term, rush requests can usually be processed within two working days.

Detailed information about reserves including steps for placing items on reserve and copies of the Reserve Request Form are available on the Course Reserves: Information for Instructors page. If you have additional questions or if problems arise, please contact Huong Armstrong or another Circulation staff member at phone number 667-3234 for assistance. To contact the reserve desk in Stockton, please call 467-5410.

New Journal Table of Contents Alerts (Email & RSS)

Many of the library's online resources provide automatic email alert services and RSS feeds for specific journals or research topics. The library has a list of resources with these services, as well as specific instructions for setting them up on the EBSCO and Proquest services, as well as for the Modesto Bee.

Linking to Online Library Resources:

Library subscriptions include online access to millions of articles published in over 10,000 academic journals. In many of these resources, it is possible for instructors to create links to specific articles using the Library's subscription. (e.g. Linking directly from a reading list on Blackboard or a course web site to an article allowing the students to access it directly using the Library's subscription.) The University Library has a guide to creating links to online journal articles in the most popular library resources. ( Also available in PDF.)

Interlibrary Loan:

Most materials which aren't owned by the Library can  be obtained through interlibrary loan from other libraries.  Depending on the material requested, this service typically requires between one and two weeks.  Lending periods are determined by the lending libraries.  Forms for requesting materials through interlibrary loan are available online or at the Reference Desk.

Acquisitions and Collections - Ordering and Selecting Library Materials:

The responsibility for collections - their organization, development, and preservation, as well as the expenditure of library funds - rests with the Library. The practice of selecting publications and materials for the Library, however, is a shared responsibility, with full participation of Librarians and members of the departmental teaching faculty. Librarians, through their day-to-day interactions with the collections, observe user demands and monitor usage of library materials. Through research and reference services, including interlibrary loan, they are able to note the strengths, quality, and balance of collections, as well as desiderata and deficiencies.

In keeping with American Library Association Standards for College Libraries (1995 edition), CSU Stanislaus strongly encourages the involvement of academic teaching faculty in library collection development efforts. Thus, classroom teaching faculty have primary responsibility for recommending purchase of materials in their own teaching and research areas. The Library depends upon departmental faculty to provide in-depth subject bibliographic knowledge to evaluate collections in their field and recommend purchase of appropriate materials to support teaching and curricular needs. The goal of such faculty library work is to develop well-rounded subject collections in the discipline areas as well as in inter-disciplinary areas where faculty members have knowledge. Student, staff, and administrative personnel may also submit recommendations for purchase of Library materials in areas of felt need, including recreational reading.

Each Librarian at CSU Stanislaus serves as a collection development liaison to one or more of the various academic departments. The Librarian-liaison works closely with the designated departmental Library Representative. The liaisons act as resource-persons, advisors, and communication-links to the departmental faculty, who in turn retain responsibility for selection in their own discipline area. Liaisons may also interact with departmental faculty in other collection management activities, such as evaluation of subject collections and de-selection of materials, or consulting on needed reference items or electronic resources.  The Liaisons work together with the Collection Development Librarian and Acquisitions staff to monitor fund allocations and departmental expenditures.

Each of the academic teaching departments designates a Library Representative to coordinate library materials selection in the discipline interest area of the department. Each library Representative is responsible for consulting with departmental colleagues, monitoring the department's library allocation, and expending funds in a judicious and timely manner. The Librarian-liaisons work as partners with the Library Representatives to meet collection development goals.

Library Instruction:

The University Library can provide instruction sessions for specific research skills in conjunction with a library research assignment. Please see the Instructional Services page for more information. Extra credit for attendance at former library Workshops can still be given to students who have a specific need to consult with a librarian. See the Contact a Librarian page for consultation at the reference desk or to make an appointment.

Remote Access to Licensed Library Resources from Your Home or Office:

Renewing Library Materials:

Materials borrowed from the library may be renewed online (selected circumstances only) or at the the Circulation Desk.  Provided no holds have been placed on them, materials will be renewed for another circulation period.
