Logging near Mt. Shasta, circa 1900 – 1915

Donated to the University Library Special Collections by the Fred Palmer family, a photo album titled “Camp Life” depicts life and work in two logging camps in Siskiyou County, California. Scanned copies of the original prints are displayed to show the specialized, difficult and often dangerous work (for both humans and horses) it took to extract trees from virgin forests and turn them into “boards of lumber.” Also included is: Bonnet, Wayne. (2005). Mt. Shasta camera: the photographs of Charles Richard Miller. Sausalito, Calif.: Windgate Press.

The current display, which may be viewed in the West Reading Room, features the logging operation. Part II will feature ‘snapshots’ of living in a logging camp..
